Trash, Recycling, Yard, and Other Waste

Your yard waste collection is the same day as your regular waste collection. Curbside yard waste is collected early April through mid-December. We offer several options for curbside collection. The City of Grand Rapids offers residents a free year-round drop off site for yard waste.


Yard Waste Cart

The cart is $30 to order. This is a service fee and is non-refundable. You can Request Yard Services here online. Be sure to have enough funds in your refuse account to cover the service fee. To enroll and pay by mail, use the Yard Waste Cart Program Enrollment Form.

Each time you would like your cart emptied, attach a yellow Yard Waste Tag to the cart. Each tag is $6.50.


Yard Waste Paper Bag

You can use a yard waste paper bag for leaves, grass clippings, and small twigs. Bags are $2.75 each. Items in the yard waste paper bag can't weigh more than 30 pounds.


Yard Waste Bulk Tag

You can use a purple Yard Waste bulk tag for bundles of larger twigs or branches. You may also attach this tag to a non-City paper yard waste bag. These tags cost $2.75 each. Bundled branches and twigs shouldn't be more than 4 feet long or 2 inches in diameter.

  • Twigs (less than two inches in diameter)

  • Sod
  • Dirt

Drop-Off Site

About our Compost Site

The City of Grand Rapids offers residents a free drop-off site for their yard waste. You can drop-off leaves, brush, and tree branches at 2001 Butterworth SW year-round. This service is offered to Grand Rapids residents only, so bring ID for proof of residence. Yard waste must be loose or in a paper bag. Plastic bags are not allowed. Our yard waste drop-off site is meant for residential yard waste only. Commercial contractors that want to use this site will need to work with our composting vendor We Care Denali who manages the on-site operations. Please reach out directly by phone at 616-268-5164 to work with Denali. Commercial contractors will need to weigh material on our scale and pay the tipping fee.

Holiday Site Closures

Our vendor will close the compost site on the following holidays

New Years Day, Martin Luther King Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day

Specialty Recycling Options 

Have a unique item like a computer, lightbulb, or other items that can't be recycled in single stream? Kent County Department of Public Works offers additional recycling resources. You can look up specific items and find recycling locations reimaginetrash.org.

Single Stream Recycling Program

Since 2010, the City of Grand Rapids has offered a new and improved way of recycling. We call it "Single Stream" recycling. This recycling program allows you to place all of your clean recyclable materials in one cart. You no longer need to sort your recyclables. This makes recycling easier for residents.

Do you have large trash items that need to be picked up for collection, but it can't fit in your trash can? We can help you. Online bulky item pick up scheduling and payment as well as bulk item stickers. 

Bulk Item Online Scheduling and Payment
Bulky items and/or appliances scheduled and paid for online will be collected within 3 business days from the day it is scheduled. Be sure to put your bulky item(s) out by 7:00 AM the day after scheduling and leave out until it is collected. The cost per item is $37.50 and applies to the items listed below.

You'll need to purchase a City bulk orange sticker for collection. Bulk stickers are for items listed below and are $37.50. You can purchase orange bulk item stickers at City Hall or at a local store, see our Vendor Location List(PDF, 143KB)
