Overview

Police Exploreres is a police career education program. We give young adults a chance to learn about policing. We also prepare them to become responsible, caring citizens. Throughout the program, explorers learn from our police officers. They build positive relationships with officers and gain valuable insight into policing.

Program Requirements

  • Between 14 (completed 8th grade) and 20 years old
  • Interested in policing
  • Live within 60 minutes of the Grand Rapids city limits

We meet every other Wednesday at the police department. The meeting starts at 6pm and ends at 9pm. Below is a sample schedule of the program:

November 1, 2017  6 - 9 PM

Introduction to Accident Investigations

  • An overview to the police response to vehicle accidents
  • How to complete an accident report.
  • Hands-on scenario training

November 15, 2017 6 - 9 PM

Team Building

  • An overview of the importance of having an effective team
  • Team building exercises with a partner
  • Team building exercises with a group

November 29, 2017 6 - 9 PM

Conducting a Traffic Stop

  • An overview to how police conduct a traffic stop
  • How to recognize a reason to stop a vehicle
  • Writing a traffic citation
  • Hands-on scenario training
